ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE EGRESS CODE?
Did you know there are regulations regarding emergency exits for windows? If this is the first time you’re hearing the term “Egress Code,” we recommend taking a few minutes to read our article of the month.

WHAT IS THE EGRESS CODE?

The Egress Code pertains to emergency exits in case of fire. Whether for new construction or renovation, every bedroom must have at least one window that opens directly to the outside, regardless of its location (basement, floor, etc.).The code does not apply in the presence of sprinklers or if the room has a door that opens directly to the outside.

This window must meet three conditions:
  • It must open from the inside without a key, tools, or special knowledge.
  • It must be sufficiently large (see sketch).
  • It must be easily accessible.

WHAT ARE THE RULES TO COMPLY WITH THE EGRESS CODE?

The window opening must meet the following parameters without removing the sashes: – No dimension (width or height) should be less than 15 inches (380 mm) – The area must be at least 3.77 ft² (0.35 m²)

Example :

Did you know… This is not a recent code, but in recent years, architects and municipal inspectors have been following up more rigorously in this regard.
